tips for moving during foul weather

Moving is usually not anyone's favorite activity. However, moving during bad weather can make moving an even more daunting task. With a little of our help, you will be prepared for whatever Mother Nature will be throwing your way during moving day.

First Things First

Before any precautions are taken, first thing is to see if the moving company can reschedule due to the rain or snow. If it fits in your schedule, switch moving to another day. Even though dealing with the bad weather is doable when moving, it does make life a little easier if you can reschedule.

Protecting Your Items

A big piece of artwork and furniture can be difficult to protect from rain or snow. A good way to cover larger pieces is with tarp or plastic wrap. Make sure to do this the night before your move to save you some time. If you have some clothing on hangers that you want protected from the weather, cover them in a garbage bag.

Avoid Slipping and Falling

Bad weather can sometimes create dangerous situations. To preventing slipping and tracking any mud or snow into your house, lay out towels on the floor. If it is snowing or sleeting outside, be sure to put salt on any stairs or driveways. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Your Role

While the movers are doing the heavy lifting, it is your job to take care of the other details. Purchase a few ponchos beforehand if you know that the weather is going to be bad and give them to everyone on moving day. A hot day can lead to sunburn or even dehydration. Try to have sunscreen handy and lots of beverages just in case. If it is cold outside and you have access to the utilities in your home, turn on the heat to keep everyone warm. Once everything is all settled, make a pot of hot chocolate or even coffee. Everyone has certainly deserved it.
